According to most publications the average Pay TV service (Cable or Satellite) looses 10,000 to 15,000 customers a month. This makes sense to most of us because the majority of Pay TV customers pay in excess of $100 a month. Thats is $1200 a year! And for what?
PC Magazine stated that the average person only watches 17 channels. Think about all the channels that are available that you just never watch just because they are not what you are interested in. Yet, the Cable company still expects you to pay for the “Package”. When in reality, your really just paying for the convenience of using one remote. And now I bet you are asking what we mean by “one remote”. Well, that just means the convenience of all your channels controlled by one remote. But now, it’s easy to get your tv and all your free and streaming channels on one remote. That and DVR’s that work with your free tv set up is in an upcoming review.
Now think about it like this for a moment. You grab your remote and turn the TV on. You have an average of 25 to 50+ channels in the average metropolitan area. Of those channels you have a mix of local and national news, some spanish channels and even several interest channels like Travel or Food. There is even shopping channels depending on the market you live in. And all you invested was say $100 for this example in the purchase of a HDTV antenna. That’s about the same and even less than some are paying every month for their cable/satellite bill.
For a lot of people this may be just what they need. But lets say you also want to watch certain sports or shows. This can be done a la carte using IPTV. Many people already do this by subscribing to Netflix or Hulu for example. IPTV stands for Internet Protocol TV. And you can usually find the Sport or Show you want on one of the many IPTV services available. Want to know a secret?
There are many very good free IPTV choices available. For example there is Xumo, Pluto, Sony Crackle, etc…. There are a lot available. Each has it’s merits of course, but the point is that there is a lot of “free” tv available. What most people ask once they “cut the cord” is why they did not do this sooner?
Yes, there are always a few cases where cutting the cord may not be an option. You may only have access to a show in certain cable packages for example. Or if you are in a remote location there may not be a lot of OTA (over the air) channels available.
Again, for most people “cutting the cord” is an option. You may not need the more expensive antenna. And if you have an internet ready TV, chances are it already has at least one of the free IPTV services loaded. Not to mention that depending on what you need, you can buy and own better equipment than what you rent currently.
So in the articles and links you will see reviews on all the equipment you will need to start. And if you like, you can add equipment when your ready. Here is a good example – You read a review and decide to purchase a HDTV Antenna. Now you have a mix of channels all from OTA, all free. You decide that you would like to use IPTV for more and better selection. So you read our review about ROKU and decide to try one. You plug it in and after a few minutes you have access to every service know to man.
Just kidding of course – but it will be an impressive amount of channels and a lot of them are free. You want to use your netflix account so you select the Netflix button on the ROKU and there are all your favorites. So for say $100 or less and about $10 a month you have a truckload of TV channels. Not $100+ each month for cable. Of course there are those out there that will spend $20 to $50 a month to get just what they want. But still, that’s still better than paying for hundreds of channels you don’t watch. And best of all… the annual rate increase from cable/satellite… that’s not your problem anymore.
